BEYONCÉ RETURNED TO THE MET GALA AFTER A DECADE

Few fashion appearances this year carried the anticipation of Beyoncé’s return to the Met Gala.

After last attending in 2016, Beyoncé returned to the event on May 4, 2026, this time as one of its co-chairs alongside Anna Wintour, Nicole Kidman and Venus Williams. The evening’s theme was “Costume Art,” with the dress code “Fashion Is Art.”

For her return, Beyoncé wore a custom Olivier Rousteing creation featuring a sheer base decorated with a crystal skeleton motif, a dramatic feathered train and a crown. The design offered a literal interpretation of the event’s focus on the human body and fashion as art.

Later in the evening, she changed into a black-and-nude crystallized mermaid gown by Robert Wun, paired with a sheer black organza veil. Vogue reported that the design drew inspiration from Wun’s Spring 2026 couture collection.

Her return became one of the year’s defining celebrity fashion moments — not simply because she had been away for ten years, but because her two looks were so deliberately connected to the evening’s theme.

GIGI HADID REWORKED THE MIU MIU ARCHIVE 

Gigi Hadid brought fashion history into the present at the 2026 Met Gala in a custom Miu Miu gown combining references from the house’s Spring 1998 and Spring 2011 collections. The sheer design featured floral embroidery, crystals and flame-inspired patchwork.

According to Vogue, Hadid and the Miu Miu team adjusted the patch placement shortly before the gala, making the archival-inspired design feel distinctly personal.

The result was a fresh take on the archive rather than a straightforward vintage revival.

THE MET GALA MADE FASHION AND ART COLLIDE 

The broader 2026 Met Gala belonged to the idea of fashion as an artistic medium.

CHAPPELL ROAN MADE ARCHIVAL MUGLER FEEL NEW AGAIN

At the 2026 Grammys, Chappell Roan brought one of fashion’s most recognizable archival aesthetics into the present.

She wore a custom Mugler look inspired directly by Thierry Mugler’s Spring/Summer 1998 “Jeu de Paume” couture collection. The outfit incorporated pastie-inspired elements and temporary tattoos that referenced the original runway presentation.

For her performance for “Abracadabra,” Gaga changed into an archival Alexander McQueen look from the designer’s Fall 2009 collection, specifically look 36. The red-and-black feathered design featured exaggerated shoulders and hips.

The pairing of a contemporary custom gown with a historical McQueen looks captured one of the year’s recurring fashion ideas: looking backward without becoming stuck in the past.

THE OSCARS REVIVED HOLLYWOOD GLAMOUR

The 2026 Oscars brought a different mood to the red carpet.

Coverage from the Los Angeles Times noted the continued influence of Old Hollywood glamour throughout awards season, with dramatic gowns, polished styling and historical references appearing across the major ceremonies.

The design was based on Look 45 from Chanel’s Spring 2026 couture collection and was adapted into a strapless silhouette for Kidman.

It was couture at its most literal: painstakingly constructed, highly personal and designed for one specific moment.

VENICE BROUGHT BACK MOVIE-STAR DRESSING 

September shifted the fashion spotlight to Italy and the 83rd Venice International Film Festival, held from September 2 through September 12, 2026.

The festival’s red carpets featured stars including Kendall Jenner, Amal Clooney, Kate Mara, Rooney Mara, Laura Dern and Phoebe Waller-Bridge, with major fashion houses including Chanel, Tom Ford, Giorgio Armani, Louis Vuitton, Prada and Celine represented throughout the festival.

Kendall Jenner wore a vintage Giorgio Armani Fall/Winter 1995 dress, while Kate Mara appeared in Giorgio Armani Privé and Rooney Mara wore Louis Vuitton.

George and Amal Clooney also delivered a classic Venice appearance, with George in a black tuxedo and Amal in a black Tom Ford gown.

Venice offered a reminder that traditional movie-star glamour still has a powerful place in fashion.

NEW YORK FASHION WEEK LOOKED TO THE PAST — AND FORWARD

September’s New York Fashion Week moved the conversation toward Spring/Summer 2027.
